Social media content, TV and film production, music video, advertising, print and web publishing, podcasting and digital design - our Media production department covers a broad mix of platforms and technologies and supports students to make professional content for and with industry partners.

BTEC Creative Media Production Level 2

This course gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The main focus is on four areas of equal importance, which cover the:

  • development of key skills that prove your aptitude in creative media production such as investigating and developing ideas through pre-production, production and post-production of media products

  • process that underpins effective ways of working in creative media production, such as responding to briefs and feedback, planning and generating ideas

  • attitudes that are considered most important in creative media production, including personal management and communication

  • knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as production processes and techniques.

Assessment:

There are three components in this qualification:

1. Component 1 - Exploring Media Products (internally assessed)
2. Component 2 - Developing Digital Media Production Skills (internally assessed)
3. Component 3 - Create a Media Product in Response to a Brief (externally assessed)

The components focus on:

  • the development of core knowledge and understanding, including the range of different types of media products, production processes and techniques

  • the development and application of skills such as research skills and stylistic and technical skills

  • reflective practice through the refinement of learners’ own media products that allows them to respond to feedback and identify areas for improvement.

Component 3, provides the main synoptic assessment for the qualification. Component 3 builds directly on Components 1 and 2, and enables learning to be brought together and related to a real-life situation. Component 3 requires learners to apply their production skills to the creation of a media product in response to a brief.

The BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media Production is in line with the college specialism and works closely with the Elstree Productions, Performance and Projects team, enriching the overall curriculum and providing real life opportunities for your child.


UAL Creative Media Production Level 3

Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology (601/3986/9 and 601/3987/0)

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology has been designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study and employment in the media sector.

It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in media to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification which is stimulating and demanding, and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

The qualification is delivered over two years and will enable students to develop a portfolio of work that supports progression into a range of higher education courses and careers within the media industry.

Assessment:

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology comprises of 16 units taken over two years (8 units are completed in each year). Within the first year students will undertake the following units:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to media processes and technical skills

  • Unit 2: Introduction to design and research skills in creative media production

  • Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in creative media production

  • Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness

  • Unit 5: Investigating audio production and technology

  • Unit 6: Investigating visual production and technology

  • Unit 7: Investigating interactive media production and technology

  • Unit 8: Developing media production and technology

Within the second year students will undertake the following units:

  • Unit 9 Characteristics and contexts in media and communication

  • Unit 10 Engaging with an audience in creative media production

  • Unit 11 Preparing for progression in creative media production

  • Unit 12 Specialist study in creative media production

  • Unit 13 Extended project in creative media production (Level 3)

  • Unit 14 Extended project in creative media production (Level 4)

Careers and Industry Connections:

Students have access to live briefs through the Enterprise, Projects, Partnerships and Productions department and experience live shoots, as well as making content for the school productions. Students have; had a workshop with a BBC documentary camera operator, been on trips to Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, MediaCom in London and on a Media/film focused trip to New York. Students have also sat Professional Practice Interviews with Bananasplit Productions from Elstree Studios. Studying this course would set students up for Media and Film courses at University/Film schools or apprenticeships in the industry. Alumni students have left the Media course and gone on to study Media/Film courses at UAL, Falmouth, Animation at Pearson in London, University of Hertfordshire, Bournemouth and Westminster


OnEx 2022

Parents, carers, students and distinguished professionals from across the cultural arts industries attended our Creative arts installation OnEx 2022. Our ESA end-of-year exhibition celebrated the exceptional industry standard and artistic brilliance of students at ESA. Highlight reel is now available. Pieces on display included students’ work from the Level 2 and Level 3 visual, media and production arts courses.
