Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Forensic Investigation
Forensic science is a very practical course that covers aspects of Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as giving students the opportunity to develop a range of practical skills. Students plan and carry out investigations, collect and analyse data before presenting their research in the form of reports. Students explore a crime scene and collect evidence, they learn how to handle evidence and identify unknown substances and compounds. Students look at real world scenarios that use forensic science .
The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. The qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare students for further study or training.
Students taking this qualification will study the following units:
Principles and applications of science - examination unit covering aspects of all three sciences.
Practical scientific procedures and techniques - a practical assessment unit that gives students opportunity to look at four different analytical techniques including colorimetry, titration and chromatography.
Anatomy and Physiology of Human body systems - A research based unit that explores many aspects of the human body and studies diseases and traumas that can affect how the body functions, as well as looking at methods of treatment.
Science investigation skills - designed to give a deeper understanding of many practical techniques and applications.
Forensic applications in practice
Environmental Forensics - looking at applications of forensic science in the real world.
This course has connections with the Police and Forensic science team and laboratories across the region including Hertfordshire University, Royal society of Chemistry and Glaxo.
